Fairfax journalists strike for 24 hours over loss of 80 jobs – but union leader says he hasn't been told details of new contract The Australian has learnt that the new staff are not being given any advance notice that they are being cut. The company had said on Wednesday that 70 permanent staff would be cut from its workforce, including its business journalists, by the end of the week.

On Thursday evening Fairfax reporter Tony Smyth posted a message on his blog saying it was "appalling" that there had been no notification given to him, or to his parents, when a final decision had been made about the changes to the new contract. The announcement has also triggered anger among the national newsroom staff. It has also created the possibility that the company will look to buy its own journalists, or even go public to seek additional funding. Fairfax spokesman Mark Smith told the ABC on Thursday he had no comment to make on Smyth's claims.

"The Fairfax media remains focused on doing its job. There's still a decision to be made on what we want to do about the staff, but until that decision is made, what we're doing is focused on doing the job, delivering what our employees want.

"There will be some staff who have taken it on board that there will be some redundancies but it's only if we're getting this right that we can start to plan that. The truth is that a lot of staff have taken a long, hard look at what this job means for their lives and they're being held hostage. They've taken this really tough look and I believe there's plenty of room for these people to stay but at the same time we have to be very, very careful about the numbers that are coming." Media spokesperson Martin Weale, who had been part of the Fairfax team, said: "This morning we had the news that 20 jobs would be lost today.

"I think that's disappointing because that's only in the next three days so it's probably going to be about three days before we receive confirmation from our staff as to how these cuts are going to impact on them and their families." An employee in a Fairfax reporter's room. Photo: Paul Jeffers

He said there was a "very important decision that has to be made and that's about making sure that the editorial decisions that we're making now and on Monday and Tuesday, with the journalists that we have, we'll be able to prepare the stories for the readers." He refused to comment on the number of jobs being cut, but said the numbers could be smaller. "We're working with our senior management team and that's a number to keep in mind of what our workforce has been asked to do and what it has done, whether its on the job sites or some of the other places that we're working
